BOULDER, Colo.—Authorities are no longer allowing Colorado residents back to their homes after they fled a wildfire that has destroyed at least 169 houses near Boulder.

Winds are expected to pick up earlier than planned Thursday. That has led authorities to start closing roads that had temporarily been opened to residents.

Containment lines have been built around 30% of the 10-square-mile fire in the foothills near Boulder, but firefighters warned that progress could be undone if sparks jump the fire lines.

About 3,500 people have been out of their homes for four days, but no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
