Big Sky Resort first opened in 1973 when Montana’s population density was less than five people per square mile. Our latest project takes us back to an age when building a home was a communal effort and was expected to be your home for life. Harvesting and milling structural timbers and beams required the use of various types of axes. Trees were cut, and with nothing more than brawn and a blade, were hand hewn until square enough to provide structural integrity. Traditional hand hewn beams are a rarity these days; Fortunately, Montana Timber Products’ ranchwood™,  Pioneer series timbers and barn board can provide you the comfort and nostalgia inducing authenticity you desire for your own homestead.

The above photo features 2×12 hand hewn and Pioneer, Channel Rustic, horizontal siding, and random width circle sawn, Shiplap, vertical siding. The Shiplap siding, like the timbers, are prefinished with the Montana Timber Products’ Western Exposure color, a part of the ranchwood™ product line.

A close up of the hand hewn and Pioneer siding gives you a better look at its rustic texture and appearance. Channel Rustic siding is a great choice for multiple styles of builds. This project chose to use chinking, but many people opt to leave the “reveal” of the channel. One can always build with channel and add the chinking at a later date for a more traditional look and additional insulation.

One of our latest projects takes us back to Montana to the beautiful mountain town of Whitefish. This build utilizes Montana Timber Products ranchwood™ product line to create a very unique fusion between traditional mountain rustic and the southwestern stucco style one would find in Arizona and New Mexico.

The aesthetic 1×6 sheathing, 3×8 rafters, 1×6 deck railing, and Barn Series timbers all feature the rustic circle sawn texture offered in the Montana Timber Products line.

The deck railing provides a detailed perspective of the circle sawn texture, replicating primitive milling processes. The Montana Timber Products ranchwood™, AquaFir™, and  ranchwood™-weathered product lines are an excellent reclaimed barn wood alternative. Each product line offers color and texture choice, and are cut to order, resulting in a 5-10% waste factor compared to 35-40% with reclaimed.

Similar to the roof sheathing, the half inch spaced soffit pictured above contrasts nicely with the 1×8 vertical ship lap. All Montana Timber Products’ prefinished wood siding utilizes Seal-Once, a 100% NO VOC waterproofer with a 10 year limited warranty against water ingress.

A combination of stone, corrugated steel, cedar shingles, and Montana Timber Products siding and timbers create a another spectacular build.  The mix of exterior products compliment each other well.

As seen above, the architect chose to use a custom profiled 2×12 channel rustic siding for the horizontal application and 1×6 shiplap for the vertical cable areas. This 2×12 horizontal profile provides an opportunity to add chinking later and an excellent shadow line of depth. Everything produced by Montana Timber Products is made to order at the customer’s desired specifications, minimizing waste and allowing for a truly custom build.

This entire siding and timber package is part of the Montana Timber Products ranchwood™ product line. The timbers feature a weathered wire brushed texture. The siding features a more traditional circle saw texture replicating the primitive, historic milling process.

Set in beautiful Park City, Utah, this family created a unique and original blend of sheet metal, stone, and Montana Timber Products’ rustic, prefinished, AquaFir™ siding.

As seen above, the wire brushed textured AquaFir™ Slate Gray siding is an excellent color choice to compliment the modern building materials. The Dark Gray, 1×8 ship lap siding is beautifully highlighted by the “made-to-rust” sheet metal  and stone wainscot.

The 1×4,1×6, and 2×10 Charcoal colored trim nicely ties with the various materials of this “mountain modern” build. Montana Timber Products’ prefinished wood siding utilizes Seal-Once, a 100% VOC free waterproofer with a 10 year limited warranty.
