The south side of a barn receives the heaviest exposure to natural weathering. Longer exposure to sunlight, heavy wind, rain, and snow produces a silver gray patina.
Late afternoon sunlight and heavy weather produces a light grayish brown barnwood.
Cool morning sun and less exposure to wind, rain, and snow produces a darker, chocolaty brown barnwood.
The north side of a barn receives the least amount of exposure to the elements, often leaving some red paint intact.
Interior barnwood receives little to no sunlight, instead it has been slowly baked over decades to a dark orange brown tint. Tackroom is one of our most coveted colors due to its rarity.
Hard to find green barnwood has helped to create the demand for this natural, earthy, olive tint.
Weathered through long windswept days, lighter tones of gray are perhaps one of the most treasured colors utilized from the old barn pile.
Our Circle Sawn texture duplicates the traditionally subtle "saw mark appearance" originating from old circle saw mills.
Our Wire Brushed technique accentuates the natural wood grain pattern of each individual plank creating a refined, yet weather worn appearance.
Our Band Sawn texture is produced by the saw blade and plank being placed at a right angle to one another. The rough-sawn texture accentuates the desired worn look.
Our Raw product option can be any texture we produce, but without any added tint, process, or finish.
Our Hand Hewn process is added to Circle Sawn or Wire Brushed products to create a hand scraped texture, emphasizing character and distress marks, while highlighting the individual grain patterns found in each plank. This process adds unique Old World charm.
Our Surfaced texture creates a smooth planed, finished-looking wood.
Our Pioneer Texture replicates the olden days of adzing and sawing techniques utilized by settlers to build the original cabins of the West.

With proper care, your ranchwood™ product will remain waterproof for years. Seal-Once™ is a high-performance, toxin-free, water-based sealer that exceeds current and future eco-requirements. By incorporating sub-micron particles a unique lattice work is formed allowing the product to sink deep below the surface. As it cures it forms an interior film that prevents water from infiltrating the surface. You can simply re-seal exterior siding to your liking.
Seals and Protects against Water Penetration for up to 10-years.
ranchwood™ is so durable it comes with a 10-year limited warranty. The Seal-Once™ effective finish life is 5 years on horizontal surfaces, and up to 10 years on vertical surfaces.

Why an alternative to Reclaimed Wood?
Reclaimed wood has matured over time; it is durable and beautiful. However, some of the reclaimed wood is acquired by dismantling historical structures and ghost towns. It is limited in quantity and costly to reclaim. Only about half of the reclaimed wood is construction quality, therefore up to 50% is wasted. At Montana Timber Products, we've created ranchwood™ as a sustainable alternative.
Our Sustainable Products
We provide a wide-range of eco-friendly, and sustainable products; made with timbers and logs that have been harvested through sustainable forestry practices. The predominant method is Single Tree Selection where foresters select individual trees for harvesting. The cut logs are then removed with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment. This method creates openings in the forest canopy allowing more precipitation, sunlight, and nutrients reach the forest floor which ensures the health of other trees.
We also promote and use sealers and finishes that have zero to low VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) the decision to promote these products far exceeds the current siding industry standards. We recycle our sawdust to be re-used by local farms for animal bedding and a local pellet manufacturer. Our unique products are made in the USA and sourced from the Northwest - local to our production and final application facility. This preserves our environment by improving energy efficiency while reducing transportation pollutants, and more importantly our carbon footprint.
Sustainable and Renewable, Reduces Forest Fire Fuels, and Preserves History
- Renewable. Kiln Dried to an acceptable moisture content range, our products are more stable. Our finishing process is sustainable, which protects and improves the environment while enhancing your home.
- Healthy Forests. Our products are harvested using forest stewardship practices. Our retrieval practices are environmentally friendly and reduce the risks of wildfire and carbon release. Forests are filled with this renewable resource, and once harvested the end result is a healthier and more efficient natural environment. We utilize every inch of each tree harvested, leaving no waste.
- Preserves History. Because we're using new timber, we are also saving our beautiful historical structures for future generations. No homesteads will be sacrificed for your project.
