The inception of Shou-Sugi-Ban, the centuries old traditional Japanese method of charring wood, was the result of the need for low maintenance, rot, pest, and fire resistant wood siding and fencing. Montana Timber Products’ Charwood™ product line, provides three variations of natural, NO VOC, Shou-Sugi-Ban wood.

This week’s featured project utilizes Charwood™ Ebony as an interior and exterior solution. Ebony is the “mid-level” burn of the three Charwood™ offerings. It provides similar wood grain striping to that of the Tiger offering, but with a more intense burn to create deeper, richer, coloring.

Charwood’s incredible ability to resist fire and pests is attested to it’s charring process, which effectively eliminates the majority of its potential energy (combustibility) and it’s vascular tissue. Vascular tissue is the primary food source for boring insects; without it, you minimize the chance of the invasive pests finding their way into your home.

Charwood™ is a Japanese style charred wood known as Shou-Sugi-Ban. This method of burning, scorching, or charring the surface of wood building materials dates back hundreds of years. The process adds beauty and longevity, as well as resistance from rot, pests, and fire.

The photos above and below feature Charwood™ . This custom burn is the most heavily burned of the three Charwood™ offerings, walking a fine line of carbonization to create the perfect alligator like finish. Charwood™ is also offered in Tiger and Ebony; both of which are applied a lesser burn, resulting in different tones of wood grain accent.
