THE VISION

In many cases, municipal facilities, particularly wastewater treatment plants, tend to blend in as standard, uninspired commercial structures. However, in Big Sky Montana, they aspired to set themselves apart. Their goal was not only to construct a cutting-edge facility but also to infuse the building with the essence of its setting, a place of rugged peaks and untamed beauty.

THE SOLUTION

Choosing natural wood for the exterior of this municipal building was an obvious choice. The ranchwood™ product, in Eastern color with a circle sawn texture, perfectly encapsulated the rustic elegance that defines Montana’s character. It provided a unique and distinctive touch to a commercial space that would have otherwise been ordinary.

Products:  ranchwood™ product line in three colors southern, western, yellowstone, and one AquaFir™ color shale for exterior siding and interior accents all in douglas fir wood.
Product Use:  1×6 shiplap (mixed equally in color) in wire brush texture.  Interior wall 1×4 shiplap (mixed equally in color) in wire brush texture.  The trim and doors are in southern color in 1×8 and 1×6 square edge material.  Faux beam wrap is all 1×10 and 1×8 material in southern color all in wire brush texture.  Window flower boxes are 1×8 shiplap mixed colors and trimmed in southern square edge boards.

Products:  ranchwood™ product line in Northern and Tackroom colors for siding in douglas fir wood.
Product Use:  1×6 shiplap siding and patio ceiling in circle sawn and smooth texture with 1×4 trim in smooth. The mixture is 60% tackroom in smooth, 20% circle sawn in northern and tackroom, and 20% in northern smooth texture.

Corral board is authentic reclaimed wood for the 5th product line.   Material is available in 4″, 6”, 8”, 10” and 12″ wide boards in random or exact lengths ranging from 4ft to 16ft long.  Select from 6 profiles: shiplap, shiplap with ¼ or 1/8” reveal, square edge, square edge lap, tongue and groove, and channel rustic.  Textures for AquaFir™ and ranchwood™ are smooth, wire brushed, circle sawn, hand hewn, and pioneer.  ranchwood™ Artisan is offered in ONE texture (raked). Charwood™ makes its own texture from the burning.  Thickness offered is 1″,5/4 (cedar only), and 2″ nominal sizing. This 79,000 square foot store required more than 17,000 board feet in a custom color to stay within the corporate guidelines specified by the architect. Product Use:   Horizontal shiplap siding application with wire brush texture lends itself to a modern look.  The contemporary asymmetrical roof line adds variation to the style for the multiplex.  This roof line is also practical for snow run off in the Montana winter.  Choosing to use black trimmed:  windows, lighting fixtures, and roofing accents keep the sleek contemporary style very clean.  The green doors add that pop of color adding to the contemporary architecture.

This close up demonstrates the nice protection shiplap profiling provides.  A tight seal with a natural look.  The ease of installation makes this profile one of the most popular and can be installed vertically or horizontally, shown here.

The fence used the shiplap profile with wire brush texture, like the body of the multiplex.  Using shiplap horizontally instead of a square edge material, kept the contemporary sleek look.  The wood is sealed on all sides with Seal Once product.  Staining and sealing in a controlled environment help to insure the wood is preserved and protected from water.  Sealing after the installation does not allow for the protection of sealing all sides of the boards in a controlled environment.

Product:  Doug Fir ranchwood™ weathered  1×8 circle sawn, channel rustic profile

Product Use:  This beautiful new addition to the town of Ketchum lays in the heart of the valley and provides a host of additional amenities to the the Sun Valley area.  The Limelight Hotel is a great example of the mixed use of rock and wood to blend into the historic feel of Ketchum.

The circle sawn texture, channel rustic profile, and ranchwood™ finish results in a product that compliments the rock used throughout the building.  The color combination on this product is a mix of two custom colors specifically designed for this building.
