Surprisingly, the cost and environmental impact of shipping these empty shipping containers back over seas outweighs the production of new ones. Innovative people are upcycling these surplus, structurally sound shipping containers into alternative, sustainable, space efficient homes. The idea of upcycling is based on the principle of utilizing available non-virgin materials. The use of authentic reclaimed barn wood lives on the same principle of upcycling available materials before creating new ones. This week’s featured build displays many creative and unique interior uses of Charwood™ Ebony throughout the entire home. Montana Timber Products’ Charwood™ is a Japanese style charred wood known as Shou-Sugi-Ban. This method of burning, scorching, or charring the surface of wood building materials dates back hundreds of years. The process adds beauty and longevity, as well as resistance from rot, pests, and fire. The product is prefinished with PolySeal, a blend of Seal-Once and Poly.

The homeowners and designers created a very welcoming entryway by utilizing Charwood™ ceiling paneling as well as a traditional sliding door. The ceiling paneling features a Tongue and Groove profile allowing the fasteners to be concealed for a clean finish. The white walls, a theme throughout most of the home, creates a strong contrast with the Charwood™, resulting in a beautiful clash between modern and traditional design.

The photo below gives a great snapshot of the various materials used for this build. The off-gray vertical Shiplap in the top left portion of the photo is part of the AquaFir™ product line.
