This continuity of material creates a cohesive look, while the semi-transparent finish lets the natural grain and knots of the wood take center stage.

To bring this biophilic design vision to life, the design team skillfully matched the blonde natural wood aesthetic of the interior ceiling paneling to the cabinetry package. Then continued the look to the exterior soffits for a seamless monochromatic design integration.

The combination of selected colors paired perfectly with this home’s design vision and nature-inspired elements. The combination of horizontal siding, soffits, and trim pieces were all crafted out of Douglas Fir from the Pacific Northwest.

The exterior vertical artisan siding complements the natural antique bronze stone, creating a striking facade that honors the lakeside setting. Inside the lake home, custom Light Cascade-colored AquaFir™ cladding adds warmth and texture to walls, ceilings, and cabinetry, while custom steel elements introduce a modern touch.

Design Considerations

The design process focused on creating a space that was both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional:

• Exterior-Interior Harmony: The ranchwood™ Artisan Raked Ship Lap siding in Ash and Homestead colors was strategically used on both the main house and boat house exteriors, creating a cohesive look that respects the lakeside setting.
• Textural Contrast: The horizontal 3×16 ranchwood™ Artisan Raked Shiplap in Dusk color was custom milled by MTP.  It was purposefully placed to provide a bold contrast to the vertical siding, adding visual interest and emphasizing the home’s modern lines.
• Interior Warmth: AquaFir™ Wire Brushed Shiplap in Custom Light Cascade color was chosen for interior walls and ceilings. The varied widths (1×6, 1×8, and 1×10) were intentionally mixed to create a dynamic (yet warm) interior atmosphere that complements the exterior aesthetic.
• Custom Cabinetry Integration: The use of AquaFir™ Wire Brushed Custom T&G with 1/8″ reveal on cabinetry ensures that the wood elements flow seamlessly throughout the home, maintaining design consistency from large surfaces to more minor details.

INTEGRATING NATURAL WOOD ACCENTS ON HOUSE EXTERIOR

The project’s success lies in its judicious use of real wood accents, carefully integrated to enhance both form and function.

Wood Accent Placement and Design

By strategically incorporating natural wood elements in select siding and soffit applications on home exteriors, the design achieves an elevated visual appeal while minimizing maintenance requirements – a crucial consideration in this challenging climate.

This approach introduces a welcoming warmth to the home. Whether it’s a rustic touch or a modern twist, wood accents can redefine the style of your house exterior, making it both inviting and distinctive.

Design Considerations

• Solar Orientation: Given the area’s high percentage of annual sunshine, UV exposure was a primary concern for maintaining the wood’s visual integrity over time. To maximize longevity and reduce maintenance intervals, wood applications were predominantly focused on north, east, and west-facing elevations, strategically avoiding southern exposures where UV impact is most severe.
• Protected Installations: Soffits and covered patio areas were identified as ideal locations for wood applications. These protected zones allow for incorporating natural wood elements that tie the overall design together while significantly reducing exposure to harmful UV rays, thus extending the lifespan of the finishes.

This project serves as a testament to the versatility of wood in contemporary architecture, demonstrating that when applied with precision and foresight, natural materials can enhance the visual appeal and performance of modern residential designs.
